Legal Resource Group has been retained by a large, single city Florida based law firm to assist the firm in its search for a legal professional to assume firm-wide communications and business responsibilities. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a highly skilled administrative executive who leads and manages all financial and administrative functions within the firm. This is an exempt managerial position reporting directly to the firm's Managing Partner. The position has four direct reports including the Director of Finance, Director of Marketing, Director of Human Resources, and the Director of Technology. The current COO is retiring after having been in the position for 11 years.
It is the COO’s ongoing responsibility to work with and make recommendations to the CEO, Executive Committee and Board of Directors as a strategic business partner consulting, advising and providing direction to establish, evaluate the impact of and advise regarding the firm’s long range goals, strategies, programs, plans and policies. The COO shall oversee and make recommendations with respect to the composition and performance of the staff so that it functions smoothly and efficiently with the least number of people. The position is responsible for assuring the establishment and maintenance of a motivating environment, and be a visible leader within the firm through communications and personal interactions with partners and other members, and be viewed as a role model in terms of the key behavioral characteristics and values required in the firm. The COO knows and understands each of the firm’s markets and has regular contact with the lawyers.
The COO is responsible for meeting regularly with every person or group having management responsibilities, and helps them to achieve their goals and priorities for the fiscal year, consistent with the firm’s strategy. The position participates in the development of annual marketing and financial plans of the Group Captains and all offices of the firm and meets regularly with the firm leaders, individually or by attending committee and other meetings, to discuss matters that materially affect the firm practice areas and to coordinate practice management, management planning and marketing efforts.
The successful candidate will be an executive with appropriate education and experience in the professional services industry. It is expected that candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or a related field. An MBA or other advanced degree would be preferred. A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively increasing responsible experience in managing a sophisticated organization is required. A substantial portion of that experience must be in a professional services setting with some specific experience in the legal industry. Experience with an appropriately sized multi-office law firm is preferred.
